Background of the Study
Mental health issues have become a growing concern globally, with depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders affecting millions of people. In Nigeria, the stigma surrounding mental illness, coupled with inadequate mental health resources, significantly limits access to mental healthcare (Oluwaseun et al., 2024). In Jigawa State, mental health awareness and services remain inadequate, and a significant proportion of individuals with mental health issues do not receive the care they require. Nurses, as integral members of the healthcare team, are uniquely positioned to advocate for mental health awareness, provide care, and support patients with mental health disorders.
The World Health Organization (WHO, 2024) highlights the crucial role of healthcare professionals, including nurses, in promoting mental health awareness and advocating for policy changes. Nurses are often the first point of contact for individuals with mental health issues, making their role in advocacy vital to improving mental health outcomes. This study seeks to assess the role of nurses in mental health advocacy in Jigawa State, their involvement in mental health care, and the challenges they face in advocating for improved mental health services.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of mental health, services in Jigawa State remain underdeveloped. Many individuals with mental health issues suffer in silence due to stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to care. Nurses, who have direct contact with patients, can play a key role in changing perceptions, advocating for better mental health services, and providing direct care. However, there is limited research on how nurses contribute to mental health advocacy in Jigawa State, and this lack of information may hinder efforts to improve mental health care.
This study seeks to assess how nurses contribute to mental health advocacy, identify barriers to their involvement, and recommend strategies to enhance their role in mental health awareness and advocacy in Jigawa State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in mental health advocacy in Jigawa State.
2. To identify the challenges nurses face in advocating for mental health.
3. To propose strategies for enhancing the role of nurses in mental health advocacy.
Research Questions
1. What role do nurses play in mental health advocacy in Jigawa State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in promoting mental health awareness and services?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the involvement of nurses in mental health advocacy?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Jigawa State play a significant role in mental health advocacy.
2. Stigma, lack of training, and limited resources hinder the involvement of nurses in mental health advocacy.
